A Little History of Western Commercial Services

The year was 1955 – The place – FABULOUS Las Vegas, Nevada – A growing oasis in the desert that was quickly capturing the imagination of our Great Nation. The growing city had a need to protect the Guests and Employees from the risks of kitchen fires.

This was the wild West after all, and as everyone knew out West – you always built the cook shack away from the rest of the camp because sooner or later it was going to burn down. Well that wild West philosophy gave way to the glitz of Fremont Street and the Glitter Gulch was a boomtown – one in which there was simply no room for anything burning down!

With the vision that the future of restaurant fire protection was a key element to keeping Life and Property protected, two business partners and true Las Vegas locals, Ben Morris and Sheldon Mellor, launched a company that was originally known as Western Fire Prevention.

The company traveled as far as Colorado and Texas providing cleaning and fire suppression to grease exhaust systems. As history would have it the city of Las Vegas grew and along with it grew the company, pioneering and inventing new techniques for the exhaust cleaning business as time marched on.

In 1992, the men decided the time was right for their sons to join the business. At the same time, their Western Fire Prevention partnership disbanded. An amicable and friendly agreement was made and each of the business partners continued focusing on the part of the business they had the most expertise in – Western Fire Prevention kept the original name and continued servicing fire suppression systems while Western Commercial Services became its own entity to continue our specialization in Grease Exhaust System cleaning.

Armed with a BA in Economics and an MBA from Carnegie-Mellon, our current General Manager and son of our founder, Jeffrey Morris began a decade long pursuit or re-inventing the family’s business. Jeff’s dedication to improving methods and techniques has formed the foundation of the modern Las Vegas exhaust cleaning industry.

Presented with the initial challenge of servicing some of the most complex systems ever designed – (how do you get exhaust out of a pyramid anyway?!) – Western Commercial Services exceeded expectations, and became an innovator in creating what is now the recognized standard of excellence in the industry.

Always leading the way, Western Commercial served at the forefront in the International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association (IKECA) for which Jeffrey Morris served as Vice President and later President of that organization. Maintaining responsibility for the continuing education and certification of exhaust system service providers proved just one of many vital functions Jeff fulfilled during that time. Today, Western Commercial continues aiding in the creation and implementation of essential instruction and information materials.

By 1998 our company recognized the scope of our services included the need for exhaust repair services and followed up by obtaining a C-21 contractor’s license. With the ability to provide quality exhaust, AC and Refrigeration maintenance and repair, Western Commercial was now able to offer a simple “one call does it all” solution for our busy restaurant clientele.

As the exhaust industry evolved towards more emphasis on pollution control, our company’s background and experience made us uniquely qualified to provide all necessary service and repair for the latest UV and electrostatic pollution control systems.

In 2001, Jack Grace was recruited to join the team at Western Commercial Services and lead the development of the business into the new millennium with an aggressive, far-sighted plan to invest heavily in our organization and its employees. With that goal in mind, we’ve created the best-equipped, most thoroughly trained and nurtured team in the Las Vegas area.

Unfortunately, the exhaust service industry has traditionally been plagued with inordinate numbers of drug abusers. Western Commercial decided to put a stop to this once and for all, raising the bar forever. As one of our most aggressive industry-altering moves we created the first and quite possibly only 100% certified Drug-Free team of exhaust and repair service technicians in Las Vegas. Our technicians not only undergo pre-employment testing, but also participate in a WEEKLY random testing program to insure compliance. Our commitment to a drug free technical team includes an open policy for our clients to audit our drug testing records, while protecting the privacy of our individual technicians. We have found a way to strike a delicate balance to prove all of our technicians have been tested and are subject to ongoing testing with YEARS of records to prove it. No other service company in Las Vegas can prove their dedication to this important process in the way that Western Commercial Services can.
